LOCATION - MACKAY
Mackay is one of Queensland's major
coastal cities on the Bruce Highway. It was settled in 1862, and was named after
Captain John Mackay who discovered the valley of the Pioneer River.
Settlers of this area introduced sugar and Mackay is now Australia's leading sugar
producer, has the world's largest bulk sugar terminal, and leads the world in
sugar research.
Nestled on the coastline halfway between Brisbane and
Cairns, the Mackay Region can be accessed via Air, Train or Bus .
Some of the area's best kept secrets include the lush scenery and wildlife
(including the platypus) at Eungella National Park and
Finch Hatton Gorge, the dramatic coastline at
Cape Hillsborough National Park, over 31 Beautiful Beaches, access to the Great
Barrier Reef, and the region's Historical Hinterland.
It has a population of 70,000 on latitude 21 S and Longitude 148 E. Its
nearest city is Brisbane approximately 1000 kms to the south. The region is also famous for its fresh local seafood, beef,
produce and friendly locals.
